Ein el-Hilweh Camp

Some pictures of Ein el-Hilweh Camp

In november 2008 a Sumud delegation went to Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp on invitation from the Nashet association, composed of both Palestinian and Lebanese young men and women living in that camp.

Here we publish some pictures of Ein el-Hilweh Camp, to provide a general idea of the place in which Sumud work brigade will work.

Cable web

An impressive flying cable web hangs over the streets of Ein el-Hilweh, whose inhabitants must face serious difficulties for electricity and water supply.

Portraits

Portraits of political leaders and martyrs crowd the streets and houses of Ein el-Hilweh, which hosts several movements who administrate the Camp in relative autonomy through an inclusive coordination table.

Overview

Overview of some houses of Ein el-Hilweh, where some small and fragile buildings host numerous families and a very dense population, despite the depopulation policy of the Lebanese goverment.

Coffee stall

In one of the main streets of Ein el-Hilweh, a boy is pushing a wheeled coffee stall used for freelance hot coffee selling.

Football field

Even if the sports infrastructures are not stunning...

Market

The main market of Ein el-Hilweh is usually very crowded and lively: this picture of ours unfortunately isn't revealing, having being shot in the late afternoon, on friday and after a fight.

Alleys

Ein el-Hilweh shows an intricate web of narrow alleys. "During the Israeli invasion in 1982", says one of our friends, "the Zionist soldiers found very difficult to defend themselves from Palestinian ambushes in this labyrinth in which they were unable to orient. At the end, they solved the problem at its roots laying the camp waste".

Hospital

One of the two hospitals in Ein el-Hilweh, built and managed by the Human Call Association. The sanitary situation in the camp can be considered almost good.

Children

Getting two children to stay still at once is an impossible task even for our heroic photographer.

Playing kids

... the kids of Ein el-Hilweh find nevertheless the way to have fun.
